Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene with in a music video is extremely important as it's everything the audience sees; from lighting to costumes and props to make up. All of these things are vital when creating the perfect setting for the video.

Setting-  Acoustic/hip hop videos tend to be filmed outside either in a park or in a woods.
Lighting- The lighting usually tends to be fairly dark as the songs often seem to have some kind of meaning or deep story behind them so the dark lighting suggests sadness and meaning
Costume-The costumes in the genre of this video tend to be quite casual and nothing too bright.
Props- There are many props that are often associated with acoustic/hip hop videos, some include alcohol, guitars and a microphone.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluating stages?

Throughout the entire project I used a huge variety of media technologies to end up with my final products.

When doing the research and planning many different media technologies were used. Survey Monkey was an extremely helpful was of finding out more about about our target audience and what they wanted from our video and most of the ideas for our construction was based around this audience research. Youtube was also very helpful as we would use it to watch videos by artists of the similar genre to analyse and get a good idea of the codes and conventions that we should have included in our video. Another helpful media technology was a website called Prezi. This helped me present my findings when researching and planning and was easy to refer back to when constructing. I also used Prezi to present the analysis of a music video by Lily Allen and the results from a survey I constructed on Survey Monkey.

When constructing the video, we used a huge variety of soft wear and hard wear to achieve what we wanted. For example, we used cameras, a tripod and an Apple Mac computer and learnt how to use them in much more depth than in AS. We also used Final Cut Pro to edit the video which was very important for the final outcome of the video as the soft wear was very professional and allowed us to achieve exactly what we wanted- for example we were able to change the lighting in order to improve the continuity of the video as different scenes were filmed at different times of the day.

When constructing the magazine advert the main program I used was Serif PagePlus X6. This program was extremely helpful as it allowed me to do everything I wanted and I was very pleased with the final outcome. Whilst constructing the magazine advert I also used Serif PhotoPlus X5. I used this soft wear to edit the main photo I used as the album cover for my advert.

When constructing the website, the program I used to do so was Wix. This website was very useful as it allowed me to choose my template and gave me a lot of freedom in order to achieve the image I had in my head when initially starting the project. I found that this website had a good variety of options in fonts, colours, templates and optional features for the website such as a photo gallery. I also found this website very user friendly and I'm very happy with the final outcome of the website.

When evaluating I wanted to try some different programs to use in order to expand my knowledge in media technologies. I tried to use a website called Powtoon but I found it didn't allow me to do what I wanted and didn't give me much freedom in terms of changing text box sizes and adding images etc. so I went back to Prezi and I'm pleased with the outcome. I also used Microsoft PowerPoint for one of my evaluation questions. I wanted to make a poster and felt that that was the best way about it as I was familiar with the program and it allowed me to do exactly what I wanted.

I have made a big progression from AS to A2 as I have learnt how to use a larger range of software products and also learnt about them and how to use them in more depth in order to improve the outcome of my final products and present my research and evaluation.

Website feedback

I asked a few people what they thought about my website and here's what they said:

Georgia- She said that she liked the background as it was appropriate for the genre. She also said that she liked how the latest music video was one of the first things you saw. However she did say that the blue banner should be a different colour to match the house theme so I will consider changing it to red for my final draft.

Joe- He said he liked the photo gallery feature however he said that it would be better if there was a variety of shots, for example there could be a few more close up shots.

Lauren- She said liked the header at the top. She said that she also liked the tool bar as it looked clear and easy to navigate your way around the website. However she did say that the fonts would look better if they were all the same.

Feedback on magazine advert

I asked people in my year for feedback on my magazine advert and here's what they said.

Rhianon- She said she like that it was simple and not too overwhelming. She said she also liked the colour of the writing in red as it was bright and made the advert more eye catching to the audience. Another thing she said that she liked was the quote as it was short and straight to the point which made you want to read it.

Katie- She said that she liked the font of "Join The Club" as she said it suited the genre of the music. However she did say that the font of the website should be the same as the font of "Lucy Spraggan" so I will consider changing it for my final draft.

Adam- He said that he likes the image that I used because it drew your attention to the image.

Evaluation question 2 draft 2

How I'm going to present my evaluation questions

Question 1: Prezi- I have chosen to present question 1 on Prezi because it's a clear and easy way to present an evaluation, and I can also have different slides for the sections of the question.
Question 2: Poster- I have chosen to make a poster, on Microsoft Powerpoint, because I can easily insert pictures and have different text boxes to clearly separate my paragraphs.
Question 3: Website- I will be making a website using a website called Wix. I think that this will be effective because I will be able to spread out my writing and images.
Question 4: I will use blogger to present this question because it will mostly be writing.

Ancillary feedback

I was given some feed back on the 3rd draft of my website and magazine advert by my teacher. I was told the following;

Webpage
- My layout and tabs were misplaced and also didn't match the house theme
- There was no editing done to the images in my photo gallery
- My image choices needed to be changed
- There was a lack of information about the arstist and what the artist is currently working on

Magazine Advert
- The artists name needed to be bigger than the album title
- Need to reconsider fonts
- My central image wasn't the best choice
- It is hard to see the arstists face in the image as I over editted the image and it is also hard to see her style which can be misleading for the audience

Evaluation Draft 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
-  Used Youtube as a platform to present our video
- Used conventions of a typical acoustic/hip hop video such as telling a story (narrative), hand held camera to make it more realistic, fast shots to keep up with the pace of the song, casual costumes and dangerous props e.g. knife.
- As far as challenging conventions I would say that using mainly female characters to act out the story definitely challenges the stereotypical conventions of an acoustic/hip hop video as we usually don’t associate violent behaviour and knife crime with young women.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
-  Same colour scheme
-  Same type of images
- Same house theme so that people automatically link it to the same artist and easily identifiable to our audience
- Created synergy by aiming to promote the same product (Lucy Spraggan Album)
- Overall I think that they are successful because they are both clear and easy to read in order for people to see what we are trying to promote and market to our target audience

What have you learned from your audience feedback?
From our questionnaire we created on survey monkey and interview/focus group chat we carried out and uploaded to Youtube we discovered the following from our audience:
- That they liked the idea of cutting between lip syncing and story telling
- They didn’t think having a clip of a live concert was compulsory for a music video
- (can't get to Youtube video as it is on private)
Questions I will ask our target audience for more up to date feed back:
- Do you think the lip syncing is in time?
- Do you think there is a good amount of story telling?
- Are there any points of the video that don't make sense or isn't clear what's happening?
- Are there any improvements you think we need to make?

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluating stages?
- Editing on final cut pro
- Camera to record and take images for ancillary tasks
- Serif Page Plus for magazine advert
- Website creator to create website
- Adobe Photoshop to edit images for ancillary tasks
- Youtube to upload final cut of video
- Social media for audience feedback
- Been a big progression from AS to A2 as I have learnt how to use a larger range of soft wear products and also learnt about them and how to use them in more depth

Magazine advert draft 5

I changed the image to one where she is looking into the camera as I felt that it would attract the target audience more and make it look as if she is looking at the person who is looking at the advert- which will help connect to the audience. I also edited the image in  Serif PhotoPlus to make it brighter and therefore more eye catching. I also made the "Lucy Spraggan" a brighter and more vibrant shade of red to match the website more and to also make it more eye catching. I also added the Columbia Record Label logo as I found out from my research that the was one of the main codes and conventions of a magazine advert.
